Victoria, BC (Nov. 7, 2009) – A new state-of-the-art patient and family support centre, a predictive
cancer research centre, and a radiation innovation wing at the BC Cancer Agency’s Vancouver Island
Centre will be built with the help of the Island Savings Credit Union. Today, Island Savings
announced a donation of $125,000 to the BC Cancer Foundation’s Inspire the World campaign. The
$10 million campaign will enable the construction and renovation of the 10,000 square foot project.
“We all know that when a member of the family gets cancer, the whole family gets cancer. It affects
everyone. Sometimes they fight alone and other times they fight with the help of a community,” said
Rod Dewar, President, Chief Executive Officer, Island Savings. “We are proud to be entering a five-
year partnership with the BC Cancer Foundation.”
On Vancouver Island, 4,000 people are diagnosed with cancer each year. Island Savings’ 45,000
members also have their own personal associations with cancer. The Island Savings family has been
directly affected too.
“As a cancer patient, I was fortunate to have the support of amazing friends and family. Not everyone
is as lucky as I am, which is why the new family support area at the cancer clinic is so important in
helping people fight their battle with cancer,” said Paula Marchessault, cancer survivor and Island
Savings staff member.
“Patients consistently tell us they are very satisfied with the medical care they receive at the BC
Cancer Agency’s Vancouver Island Centre; however, patients and their families express a great need
for improved psychological and emotional help,” said Dr. Ivo Olivotto, Professor and Head, BC
Cancer Agency Radiation Therapy Program. “Island Savings’ incredibly generous gift will help
empower cancer patients and their families.”
